Singer makes a promise to fans
By Christina Low

SINGING emotional songs can be quite challenging to Winnie Hsin, especially when it tugs at her heartstrings.

The Taiwanese star is known to go all teary when she performs the song Ling Wu.

At one of her concerts in Taiwan, her fans, too, were seen wiping off their tears.

“I'd sung the song (Ling Wu) to kick-start the concert but I guess it wasn’t such a good move after all, so at my second concert there, I left it until the last,” Hsin said during a recent press conference to
announce her upcoming concert in Genting Highlands.

Hsin has promised to sing Ling Wu at her concert in Genting Highlands but is unsure when she will sing it during her performance.

Other hits that her fans can look forward to enjoying are Wo He Chun Tian You Ge Yue Hui, Liang Liang Xiang Wang , Wei Dao and Shen Qing Xiang Yong, which is a duet that she originally sang with the late Leslie Cheung.

There will also be a guest appearance by Taiwanese singer-songwriter Sky Wu, who has composed songs for artistes such as Vivian Chow, Rene Liu and Jacky Cheung in the past and whose Mandarin hits include Te Bie De Ai Gei Te Bie De Ni and Fen Xiang.

The concert, entitled The Promise, will be held at 8pm on July 26 at the Arena of Stars. Tickets are priced at RM80, RM130, RM180, RM250 and RM330.

Early birds will get a 30% discount on all tickets except the RM330 tier; this offer is limited to the first 2,000 fans.

Malaysia The Star 10 June 2008

WITH over 20 years of experience under her belt and more than 200 songs to her name, Taiwanese singer Winnie Hsin Hsiao Chi’s biggest problem when holding a concert must be the selection of songs. But for her upcoming Winnie Hsin – The Promise ‘Live’ in Genting 2008 concert on July 26 at the Arena of Stars, there is one song that is a ‘must sing’ – Shen Ching Xiang Yung (Deep Embrace), a duet with the late Leslie Cheung.

This is in fulfilment of a promise Cheung made to her before his death. “I was a guest artiste for his 28-show concert in Hong Kong and he had promised me that he would be my guest artiste when I hold my
concert,” Hsin says.
“But I was too late However, I intend to help him fulfil his promise to me.”
Hsin performed the duet with Cheung on video in her Taiwan concert two years ago and she intends to repeat the performance in her Malaysian concert, which would definitely be a highlight of the show.

At the same time, Hsin also promises to perform lots of classic hits that would include Japanese and Korean songs as well.
Apparently in the past, she had released an album containing theme songs from Japanese and Korean dramas, which was a hit in Malaysia.
She also found out that fans here were particularly fond of one track titled Yung Yuan (Always). While in Kuala Lumpur to plug her upcoming concert, Hsin also discovered during a live radio show where fans called in that they are also partial to her old hit, Ke Ai De Mei Kui Hua (Lovable Rose).

As these two tracks are not on the list for her concert here, Hsin promises to bring this up during meetings with her producer when she returns to Taiwan and see if she could include them in the line-up.
Where costumes are concerned, the lady says that her priority is her music. “During a concert, you can wear things that you don’t usually put on but to me, as long as they are beautiful clothes and are able to
bring out the moment, it is enough,” she says.

And when it comes to whether she would be showing off some nifty footwork at the concert, Hsin says that it has not been decided as yet.
Topping it all off would be a piano recital, which she feels is not something that is done during a concert very often.

Sharing the limelight with her on stage is her old friend Sky Wu and Hsin promises plenty of interaction with the veteran singer who is a renowned songwriter as well.

Hsin, who majored in music and minored in piano and violin, first emerged in the music scene in 1987 when she released her debut album, Lonely Winter.

Since then, she has garnered numerous awards and has mesmerised fans throughout Asia with her melodious voice.
Make a date with her this July and bask in the magic that is Winnie Hsin.
Tickets for the concert are priced at RM80, RM130, RM180, RM250 and RM330. For ticket reservations, call 03-2718 1118 or logon to www.genting.com.my.

Sentimental side
By : SHARON WONG

Expect tears to flow at Winnie Hsin’s concert. SHARON WONG tells you why.

THE Winnie Hsin — The Promise Live In Genting 2008 concert on July 26 will be a night to remember for fans of the veteran Taiwanese singer.

A prolific singer in the Taiwan music circle, Hsin is fulfilling a promise that the late Leslie Cheung made to her when she was his guest artiste during his 28-show concert in Hong Kong.

“He said that he would be my guest artiste when I hold my concert,” she said. “But I was too late.”

However, Hsin has found a way to help an old friend fulfill his promise.

In her Taiwan concert two years ago, she did a duet with Cheung via video recording and the moment was so touching that by the time she finished the song, her face was awash with tears. And the audience cried right along with her.

Well-known for her over-active tear ducts, Hsin said that Cheung, who came to understand about her bad experience in her personal life, had advised her to “let the past be the past” and that the more important thing is to “take good care of herself and not be too emotional”.

Easier said than done.

According to Hsin, it is difficult for her to control her tears.

As a result, these days, whenever she is singing a particularly emotional song, like the track Ling Wu (Realise), she arranges it to be at the tail-end of the concert so that she could complete everything
before bursting into tears.

“These days, I cry when I sing that song not because I’m sad but because I’m touched,” she explained.

Tears could flow freely at her concert on at Genting Highlands, especially during her VCR duet with Cheung.

Hsin revealed that in addition to her popular hits, she would also be singing some Japanese and Korean drama theme songs.

Her album containing such songs in the past was very well-received by her Malaysian fans, in particular the track Yung Yuan (Always).

In addition, one of her classic hits titled Ke Ai De Mei Kui Hua (Lovable Rose) seems to be a Malaysian favourite.

Hsin will consider including this song in her line-up for her upcoming concert here.

Her guest artiste for the night is veteran Taiwanese singer Sky Wu, who began his songwriting career in the mid-80s and went on to become a singer in his own right.

Hsin will also be performing a piano recital and promises to look pretty for her Malaysian fans.

“One gets to wear beautiful costumes for a concert, the things that you normally do not get to wear,” she said.

“But I would not be placing too much attention on costumes as my priority lies in my music.

“I had several outfits made for my Taiwan concert and some were not used. I might consider using them for my Malaysian concert. As long as they make me look beautiful, that would be enough.”

Tickets are priced at RM80, RM130, RM180, RM250 and RM330. For more information, call 03-27181118 or log on to www.genting.com.my.
